King David of Scotland

David II was born on 5 March 1324 at Dunfermline Abbey in Fife, Scotland. He was the son of Robert I of Scotland and Elizabeth de Burgh. David became King of Scotland in 1329 at the age of five following the death of his father. He was crowned at Scone in November 1331, becoming the first Scottish monarch to be anointed at his coronation.

During his early reign, David II was governed by a series of guardians due to his young age. The political landscape was unstable, with Edward III of England supporting Edward Balliol's invasion of Scotland. After the Battle of Halidon Hill in 1333, David and Queen Joan fled to France, where they remained until 1341.

In 1346, David II invaded England to support France during the Hundred Years' War but was captured at the Battle of Neville's Cross. He spent eleven years as a prisoner in England, during which his nephew Robert Stewart governed Scotland. Upon his release in 1357, the Treaty of Berwick ended the Second War of Scottish Independence, with Scotland agreeing to pay a ransom for David's return.

David II died at the age of 46 on 22 February 1371 at Edinburgh Castle and was buried at Holyrood Abbey. He was succeeded by his nephew, Robert II, as he left no children.
