King Charles IV of France

Charles IV, known as the Fair in France and the Bald in Navarre, was born on 18/19 June 1294. He became King of France and Navarre in 1322, succeeding his brother Philip V. Charles was involved in a conflict with King Edward II of England over the Duchy of Guyenne, leading to the War of Saint-Sardos. His reign ended the direct line of the Capetian dynasty, contributing to a succession dispute that led to the Hundred Years' War.

Charles IV's domestic policy included debasing the coinage, increasing taxes, and confiscating estates, which made his administration unpopular. He was involved in the expulsion of Jews from France following the 1321 leper scare. Charles relied heavily on his uncle, Charles of Valois, for military and political advice. He also founded a library at Fontainebleau.

Charles married three times: first to Blanche of Burgundy, then to Marie of Luxembourg, and finally to Jeanne d'Évreux. His marriages produced several children, but only his daughter Blanche survived to adulthood. Charles's death without a male heir led to a succession dispute between the Valois and the English monarchs.

Charles IV died on 1 February 1328 at the age of 33 and was buried at Saint Denis Basilica. He was succeeded in France by his cousin Philip of Valois, who became Philip VI, and in Navarre by his niece Joan II.
