King Charles III (The Simple) of France

Charles III, also known as Charles the Simple or the Straightforward, was a Carolingian monarch who ruled as King of West Francia from 898 to 922 and as King of Lotharingia from 911 to 919–923. The posthumous third son of King Louis the Stammerer and Adelaide of Paris, Charles was initially bypassed for the throne in favor of other Carolingian and non-Carolingian rulers due to his youth and the political circumstances following the deaths of his half-brother Carloman II and cousin Emperor Charles the Fat.

Charles’s reign saw notable events such as the Siege of Paris by Vikings, which led to the Treaty of Saint-Clair-sur-Epte and the creation of the Duchy of Normandy in 911. His rule was also marked by the acquisition and then loss of Lotharingia, marital alliances, and the revolt of nobles exacerbated by his favoritism towards Hagano. His eventual deposition led to imprisonment, and he died in captivity, leaving a legacy through his son, Louis IV of France.
