King Alfonso VII of Castille

Alfonso VIII, known as the Noble or the one of Las Navas, was born on 11 November 1155 in Soria to Sancho III of Castile and Blanche of Navarre. He became King of Castile in 1158 following his father's death, although his rule was initially nominal due to his young age. During his minority, Castile was embroiled in conflicts among noble houses, with Alfonso being saved from these factions by a loyal squire. By the age of fifteen, he began to restore order in his kingdom, reclaiming Toledo from the Laras.

In 1170, Alfonso married Eleanor of England, strengthening his political alliances. He engaged in territorial disputes with his uncle Sancho VI of Navarre and sought arbitration from his father-in-law, Henry II of England. Alfonso worked to unite Christian kingdoms against the Almohads, culminating in the Treaty of Cazola in 1179. After a defeat at the Battle of Alarcos in 1195, he later led a coalition at the Battle of Las Navas de Tolosa in 1212, breaking Almohad power.

Alfonso VIII was a patron of culture, founding the first Spanish university at Palencia, although it did not survive him. His court was a center of cultural achievement, and he and his wife were the first to reside in the Alcázar of Segovia. Alfonso's personal life included a debated relationship with Rahel la Fermosa, a Jewish woman, which inspired literary works. His marriage to Eleanor produced 11 children, including Berengaria and Blanche, who became queens and mothers of future saints.

Alfonso VIII died on 5 October 1214 at the age of 58 in Gutierre-Muñoz and was buried at the Abbey of Santa María la Real de Las Huelgas. He was succeeded by his son, Henry I of Castile.
