Alexander II of Scotland

Alexander II was born in Haddington, East Lothian, and was the only son of William the Lion and Ermengarde de Beaumont. He became King of Scotland following his father’s death and was crowned at Scone. His reign saw the signing of the Treaty of York, which established the Anglo-Scottish border. Alexander’s rule was marked by efforts to maintain Scotland’s independence from England and to extend his authority over the Isles.

His first marriage to Joan of England ended with her death, and he later married Marie de Coucy, with whom he had a son, Alexander III. Alexander II’s reign included significant military and diplomatic activities, including conflicts with insurgent clans, negotiations with England, and attempts to secure the Western Isles. He died on the Isle of Kerrera and was buried at Melrose Abbey.
