Judith of Flanders was born in 1032 in Bruges, as the only child of Baldwin IV, Count of Flanders, and Eleanor of Normandy. She became Countess of Northumbria through her marriage to Tostig Godwinson and later Duchess of Bavaria after marrying Welf I. A patron of the arts, Judith owned a collection of books and illuminated manuscripts, two of which are currently held at the Morgan Library & Museum in New York.
Judith’s first marriage to Tostig Godwinson led to her becoming Countess of Northumbria in 1055. She was known for her piety and contributions to the Church, particularly to the Church of St Cuthbert in Durham. After Tostig’s death, she married Welf I, Duke of Bavaria, in 1071 and became Duchess of Bavaria. Her death occurred on 5 March 1095, and she was buried at Weingarten Abbey.

Children: Welf II, Henry IX, Kunizza, and at least three illegitimate sons by Tostig.
