John of Brittany, Earl of Richmond

John of Brittany, also known as Jean de Bretagne, was born around 1266 and served as the 4th Earl of Richmond. A member of the House of Dreux, he was closely connected to the English monarchy, being a nephew of Edward I. John began his royal service under Edward I and continued under Edward II. His father’s title of Earl of Richmond was conferred upon him on 15 October 1306. His roles included being named Guardian of Scotland during the conflicts with Scotland and Lord Ordainer in the baronial rebellion against Edward II.

Recognized for his diplomatic acumen, John was employed by both Edward I and Edward II for his negotiation skills. Despite his political roles, he was not as politically active as his contemporaries. John never married and left no known issue, leading to his title and estates passing to his nephew, John III, Duke of Brittany, upon his death. After Edward II’s abdication, John retired to his estates in France, where he died in 1334.
