John de Mowbray, 4th Baron Mowbray, was an English peer born in Epworth, Lincolnshire, England. He was the son of John de Mowbray, 3rd Baron Mowbray, and Joan of Lancaster. He married Elizabeth de Segrave, 5th Baroness Segrave, and through this union, the Mowbray family gained significant estates, including Framlingham Castle in Suffolk. Knighted by King Edward III, he participated in military campaigns in France and Brittany. His inheritance was complicated by his father’s widow, Elizabeth de Vere, and the substantial jointure of his mother-in-law, Margaret of Brotherton, Duchess of Norfolk. Mowbray was summoned to Parliament and was preparing for a pilgrimage to the Holy Land when he was slain near Constantinople.
His marriage to Elizabeth de Segrave was significant, bringing together prominent English noble families. Mowbray had two sons and three daughters with Elizabeth. His life was marked by family legal disputes and the management of his estates. Despite his relatively short life, his lineage continued to play a notable role in English nobility, with his sons becoming Earl of Nottingham and Duke of Norfolk, respectively. His untimely death near Constantinople while on a pilgrimage underscores the perils of medieval travel and conflict.
Death: Died at the age of 28 near Constantinople, Turkey, and was initially buried at the convent at Pera. His bones were later sent to England for burial with his ancestors.
