John de Mowbray, 3rd Baron Mowbray, was born in Hovingham, Yorkshire, and was the only son of John de Mowbray, 2nd Baron Mowbray, and Aline de Brewes. His father was executed after the Battle of Boroughbridge, and John and his mother were imprisoned until the fall of Edward II. Released in 1327, John later enjoyed the favor of Edward III, participating in the War of the Breton Succession and the Battle of Neville’s Cross. He died of the plague and was buried in Bedford.
