John III

John III was born in 1300 and became Duke of Brabant, Lothier, and Limburg. His rule was characterized by the economic prosperity of Brabant and the rising power of its towns. During his minority, Brabant’s towns gained authority to appoint councillors for a regency, which later evolved into the powerful states of Brabant. His foreign alliances fluctuated, initially attempting neutrality before aligning with France and later with England during the early stages of the Hundred Years’ War. He was the son of John II, Duke of Brabant, and Margaret of England. John III’s policies and alliances significantly impacted the region’s economic and political landscape during his reign.

His marital and diplomatic engagements with France and England shaped the international relations of Brabant. He navigated through complex political tensions, balancing between his roles as a vassal of the Holy Roman Emperor and his alliances with neighboring powers. Despite the changing political climate and his initial support for England, John III maintained his allegiance to France until his death in 1355. He was buried at Villers Abbey in Brussels.
