John II, born in 1239, was the eldest son of Duke John I of Brittany and Blanche of Navarre. He married Beatrice of England in 1260, aligning himself with the English royal family. Before becoming Duke of Brittany in 1286, he participated in two crusades, including the Ninth Crusade alongside his brother-in-law Edward I.
As Duke, John II was involved in the conflicts between France and England. Initially supporting Edward I, he later shifted allegiance to France after being deprived of the Earldom of Richmond. He was involved in the negotiations for the Treaty of Paris and participated in the French campaign against Flanders.
John II died at the age of 66 on 18 November 1305, after being crushed in an accident during the papal coronation celebrations in Lyon. He was buried in the Carmelite convent in Ploërmel, and his son Arthur II succeeded him as Duke of Brittany.
