John I was Count of Holland and Zeeland, inheriting the titles after the murder of his father, Count Floris V, in 1296. He was betrothed to Elizabeth of England, daughter of King Edward I, and was raised and educated at Edward’s court in England. John married Elizabeth in 1297 and returned to Holland, where he was subject to the council of Renesse and Borselen. After Borselen’s death, John II of Avesnes took over as regent. John I died at the age of 15 in Haarlem, with suspicions of murder.
