John de Mowbray, 1st Earl of Nottingham

Born in Epworth, Lincolnshire, John de Mowbray was the eldest son of John de Mowbray, 4th Baron Mowbray, and Elizabeth Segrave. He had a younger brother, Thomas, who would later become the 1st Duke of Norfolk, and three sisters, Eleanor, Margaret, and Joan. Styled as ‘cousin’ by John of Gaunt, John de Mowbray became Baron Segrave upon his mother’s death and succeeded to the barony of Mowbray after his father’s death. Knighted alongside the future Richard II and Henry IV, he was created Earl of Nottingham at Richard II’s coronation. His earldom became extinct upon his death at the age of seventeen, and he was buried at the Whitefriars in London.
