John 3rd Earl of Kent

John was an English nobleman who held the titles of Earl of Kent from 1331 to 1352 and Baron Wake of Liddell from 1349 to 1352. Born at Arundel Castle in Sussex, he was the youngest son of Edmund of Woodstock, Earl of Kent, and Margaret Wake, and was a grandson of Edward I. His father was executed for treason shortly before his birth, and John succeeded to the earldom as an infant after his elder brother Edmund’s death. John’s military involvement included participating in the campaign leading to the battle of Crécy in 1346.

John married Isabella of Julich by Papal dispensation and inherited substantial estates and income, making him financially independent by the age of seventeen. He inherited further lands from his mother and uncle, who died in 1349. John passed away at the age of twenty-two at his manor in Woking and was buried next to his father in the church of Greyfriars at Winchester. His sister Joan became his heir, inheriting his titles.
