John Fitzalan, 1st Baron Arundel

John Fitzalan, born in Etchingham, Sussex, was the son of Richard Fitzalan, 3rd Earl of Arundel, and Eleanor of Lancaster. He had notable family ties, including his brother Thomas Arundel, Archbishop of Canterbury, and his sister Joan Fitzalan, Countess of Hereford. John Fitzalan was appointed Lord Marshal of England in 1377 and was summoned to the House of Lords the same year. He was granted the right to fortify a castle in Surrey, now known as Betchworth Castle.

As an English soldier, John Fitzalan commanded a naval expedition in support of the Duke of Brittany and achieved a victory against the French fleet. His later actions, however, were marred by controversy, including the desecration of a nunnery and subsequent excommunication. His death came at sea during a storm after a series of violent and sacrilegious acts, leading to his drowning off the Irish coast. John Fitzalan was buried in Lewes, Sussex.
