John Fitzalan, 1st Baron Arundel, also known as Sir John Arundel, was born around 1348 in Etchingham, Sussex, England. He was the son of Richard Fitzalan, 3rd Earl of Arundel, and Eleanor of Lancaster. His siblings included Thomas Arundel, Archbishop of Canterbury, and Joan Fitzalan, Countess of Hereford.
In 1377, John was appointed Lord Marshal of England by Richard II and was summoned to the House of Lords. He was granted permission to fortify a castle in Surrey, which later became known as Betchworth Castle. During a naval expedition to aid the Duke of Brittany, he defeated the French fleet off the coast of Cornwall.
John Fitzalan died in 1379 at sea during a storm after a controversial expedition and was buried in Lewes, Sussex. His title and responsibilities were succeeded by his descendants.
