Joan of Bar

Joan of Bar was a French-English noble who lived during the 14th century. She became the Countess of Surrey through her marriage to John de Warenne, 7th Earl of Surrey, although the union was an unhappy one. She served as the regent of the County of Bar for her great-nephew Robert from 1353 to 1356. Joan was a daughter of Henry III, Count of Bar, and Eleanor of England, making her a niece of Edward II of England. Her connection to the English court included close ties with Isabella of France, her aunt by marriage, and likely with her cousin Elizabeth de Clare. Joan resided at Conisbrough Castle and Sandal Castle, but was largely abandoned by her husband, who sought a divorce from her. Despite his efforts, a divorce was never granted. Later in life, she played a significant role in the political landscape of Bar, engaging in a struggle for the regency against Yolande of Dampierre. She was briefly the mistress of John II of France during his captivity in London. Joan died in 1361 in London.
