Joan I was born on 14 January 1273 in Bar-sur-Seine, Champagne, to King Henry I of Navarre and Blanche of Artois. Upon her father's death in 1274, she became Queen of Navarre and Countess of Champagne. Her mother acted as her guardian and regent, and they sought protection from Philip III of France due to political pressures.

Joan married Philip IV of France in 1284, becoming Queen consort of France. She founded the College of Navarre in Paris in 1305 and managed the County of Champagne, raising an army against Henry III, Count of Bar. She never personally ruled Navarre, which was governed by French officials.

Joan I died on 2 April 1305, likely due to childbirth complications, and was buried at the Cordeliers Convent in Paris. Her son Louis I succeeded her as the ruler of Navarre.
