Joan I of Navarre

Joan I was the ruling Queen of Navarre and Countess of Champagne from 1274 until her death in 1305, and through her marriage to Philip IV, also the Queen of France. Her mother, Blanche of Artois, acted as her guardian and regent in Navarre during her minority. Joan married Philip IV at the age of 11 and became Queen consort of France, later establishing the College of Navarre in Paris in 1305.

Despite her titles, Joan never ruled Navarre in person, with governance carried out by French governors. She was more directly involved in the County of Champagne, where she took an active role in its defense, notably raising an army against the invasion by Henry, Count of Bar. Joan died in 1305, and there were allegations that her death was caused by witchcraft perpetrated by the Bishop of Troyes, Guichard, who was later arrested and released.
