Isabella of Castile, Duchess of York, was born in 1355 as the youngest daughter of King Peter of Castile and his mistress, María de Padilla. She traveled to England with her elder sister, Constance, following Constance’s marriage to John of Gaunt, 1st Duke of Lancaster. Isabella then married Gaunt’s younger brother, Edmund of Langley, 1st Duke of York, in a move to support the Plantagenet claim to the Castilian throne.
Her marriage to Edmund was reportedly troubled, and she engaged in an affair with John Holland, 1st Duke of Exeter, which cast a shadow over her reputation. She named King Richard II as her heir in her will, requesting an annuity for her younger son, Richard of Conisburgh. Isabella died on 23 December 1392 and was buried at Kings Langley Priory.
