Isabella of Aragon

Isabella of Aragon was Queen of France from 1270 to 1271 through her marriage to Philip III of France. Born as the eighth child and youngest daughter of King James I of Aragon and Violant of Hungary, her birth date is not precisely recorded but is believed to be in late 1247 or early 1248. Her father had intentions for her to join a monastery, but these plans were not realized as she was instead married off.

Isabella’s marriage to Philip was part of the Treaty of Corbeil, arranged by her father and King Louis IX of France in 1258. They were formally wed on 28 May 1262 in Clairmont. Her tenure as queen was brief due to her death at the age of 24 after a fall from a horse and the premature birth of her fifth child, who also died shortly after. Her body was subjected to Mos Teutonicus due to her death far from home and was buried at Cosenza Cathedral and later moved to the Basilica of St Denis.
