Isabella of England

Isabella of England, born on 16 June 1332 at Woodstock Palace, Oxfordshire, was the eldest daughter of King Edward III of England and Philippa of Hainault. She married Enguerrand de Coucy, Earl of Bedford, and they had two daughters. She was honored as a Lady of the Garter in 1376. Isabella’s upbringing was luxurious, with a household of servants and gowns of Italian silk. Despite early betrothal attempts, she remained unmarried until the age of 33 when she married Enguerrand VII, Lord of Coucy.

Isabella’s marriage to Enguerrand VII brought her the titles of Countess of Bedford and Lady of Coucy. Her husband was previously a hostage in England but was released without ransom upon their marriage. They lived primarily at Coucy, though Isabella frequently visited England. She was by her father’s side when he died in 1377 and passed away in England in 1382, separated from her husband and eldest daughter. She was buried in Greyfriars Church, Newgate, London.
