Titles: Viscount of Conteville
Herluin de Conteville was the stepfather of William the Conqueror and the father of Odo of Bayeux and Robert, Count of Mortain. He held land on the south side of the river Seine and was a lord of moderate income. Herluin was likely made viscount of Conteville by his stepson William and held the honour of Sainte-Mère-Église, part of the county of Mortain.
Herluin married Herleva, who was previously the mistress of Robert I, Duke of Normandy, and mother of William the Conqueror. Together, Herluin and Herleva had two sons, Odo and Robert, who became prominent figures during William's reign. They also had several daughters, including Emma, who married Richard le Goz, and another daughter who married Guillaume, Seigneur de la Ferté-Macé.
Herluin died in 1066 and was buried at Grestain Abbey in Normandy. His titles and lands were succeeded by his sons.
