Henry of Almain
2 November 1235 - 13 March 1271
House: Plantagenet
Henry of Almain, also known as Henry of Cornwall, was born on 2 November 1235. He was the eldest son of Richard, Earl of Cornwall, who later became King of the Romans, and Isabel Marshal. His name, derived from the pronunciation of d'Allemagne, reflects his father's status as the elected German King of Almayne.
Henry was knighted by his father following Richard's coronation as King of the Romans on 17 May 1257. During the Barons' War, he initially wavered between his uncle Henry III and Simon de Montfort but sided with the royalists. Captured by Montfort after the Battle of Lewes in 1264, he was held at Wallingford Castle before being released. In 1268, he took the cross with his cousin Edward but was sent back from Sicily to manage Gascony.
Henry of Almain died at the age of 35 on 13 March 1271, murdered by his cousins Guy and Simon de Montfort the Younger in Viterbo, Italy, as revenge for their father's death. He was buried at Hailes Abbey in Gloucestershire. With no children from his marriage to Constance of Béarn, his half-brother Edmund became the heir apparent.
