Henrietta Maria of France was Queen of England, Scotland, and Ireland through her marriage to King Charles I. Despite her status, her Roman Catholic faith rendered her unpopular in England and prevented her from being crowned. Henrietta Maria actively engaged in national affairs, but the escalating civil war forced her to flee to France in 1644. Following her husband’s execution, she faced financial hardship, eventually settling in Paris and returning to England after the Restoration. She later returned to Paris, where she passed away. Henrietta Maria was born into French royalty as the youngest daughter of Henry IV and Marie de’ Medici and was educated in courtly arts but not known for academic prowess.
Death: Died at age 59 in Château de Colombes, Paris. Buried at the Royal Basilica of Saint Denis.
