Hawise was the daughter of Richard I of Normandy and Gunnor. She was the sister of Richard II "the Good", Duke of Normandy, and Robert, Archbishop of Rouen, Count of Evreux. Hawise became Countess of Rennes and Duchess of Brittany through her marriage to Geoffrey I. She served as Regent for her son, Alan III, Duke of Brittany, from 1008 until 1026.

Hawise died on 21 February 1034. Her son Alan III succeeded her.
