Harold Harefoot

Harold I, known as Harold Harefoot, served as the regent of England from 1035 to 1037 and was crowned King of the English from 1037 until his death in 1040. His moniker ‘Harefoot’ suggests he was quick on his feet. Harold was the son of Cnut the Great and Ælfgifu of Northampton and became regent following his father’s death. He ruled in place of his brother Harthacnut, who was delayed in Denmark. In 1037, with support from influential figures like Earl Leofric, Harold was proclaimed king. His rule was contested by his step-brothers, resulting in the death of Alfred after being captured by forces loyal to Harold.

Harold’s reign lasted until his death in 1040, after which Harthacnut succeeded him without opposition. Initially interred in Westminster, Harold’s body was later exhumed and thrown into a fen by Harthacnut, but it was eventually reburied in a Danish cemetery in London. Questions surrounding Harold’s paternity arose, with claims that he was not Cnut’s biological son, but these remain unconfirmed.
