Harold I, also known as Harold Harefoot, was King of England from 1037 to 1040. He was the son of Cnut the Great and Ælfgifu of Northampton. After Cnut's death in 1035, Harold was elected regent of England while his brother Harthacnut was unable to travel to England due to a rebellion in Norway.
Harold wished to be crowned king since 1035, but faced opposition from Æthelnoth, the Archbishop of Canterbury. In 1037, with the support of Earl Leofric and others, Harold was officially proclaimed king. That same year, his step-brothers Edward and Alfred returned to England, leading to Alfred's capture and death.
Harold's paternity was questioned, with claims that he was the son of a cobbler, a story possibly spread by rivals. He maintained his position until his death, ruling in place of his absent brother Harthacnut. Harold's reign was marked by internal disputes and rival factions.
Harold I died on 17 March 1040 and was initially buried in Westminster. His half-brother Harthacnut succeeded him peacefully.
