Gyrth, Earl of East Anglia

Gyrth Godwinson was the fourth son of Earl Godwin and a younger brother of Harold Godwinson. In 1051, he went into exile in Flanders with his eldest brother Sweyn but returned to England the following year. After their father's death in 1053, the Godwinsons retained their influence, with Harold becoming Earl of Wessex and Gyrth being made Earl of East Anglia, Cambridgeshire, and Oxfordshire between 1055 and 1057. Gyrth attempted to dissuade Harold from engaging William of Normandy in battle, suggesting he lead the forces instead, but Harold ignored his advice.

Gyrth died on 14 October 1066 at the Battle of Hastings, fighting alongside his brothers Harold and Leofwine. His death marked the end of his earldom, with no known succession.
