Gunnora

Gunnora, born around 950, was Duchess of Normandy by marriage to Richard I of Normandy, having been his mistress before their marriage. She served as regent of Normandy during her husband’s absence and was an adviser to him and later their son Richard II. Gunnora’s parents are not recorded, but she came from a family with influence in western Normandy and was noted for her wealth. Her marriage to Richard I had significant political implications for her husband and their descendants. Gunnora’s brother and other relatives established prominent Norman families through strategic marriages.

After becoming Richard I’s wife, Gunnora was involved in state affairs, attesting ducal charters and offering counsel. She was a founder and benefactor of Coutances Cathedral and made donations to Mont Saint-Michel. Gunnora’s influence extended to securing advantageous positions for her kin, leaving a legacy through her descendants who became influential Anglo-Norman families. She passed away around 1031.
