Gunhild of Wessex

Gunhild of Wessex was a daughter of Harold Godwinson and Edyth Swannesha, likely Edyth the Fair. After her father's death in 1066, she remained in England and was educated at Wilton Abbey, a center for highborn women. During her time at the abbey, she reportedly began to lose her sight but was healed by St Wulfstan.

In 1093, Gunhild left Wilton Abbey and eloped with Alan the Red, a wealthy Norman noble. Their relationship was noted by Anselm of Canterbury, who urged her to return to religious life. After Alan the Red's death, she lived with his brother, Alan the Black, who inherited his estates.

Gunhild died sometime after 1094, with no specific cause of death or burial place mentioned. She may have predeceased Alan the Black, and no succession details are provided.
