Titles: Duke of Brittany, 3rd Earl of Richmond
Geoffrey II, also known as Jafrez in Breton, Galfridus in Latin, and Geoffroy in Anglo-Norman, was the Duke of Brittany and the 3rd Earl of Richmond from 1181 until his death in 1186. His ascension to these titles came through his marriage to Constance, Duchess of Brittany. He was the fourth of five sons born to Henry II of England and Eleanor, Duchess of Aquitaine.
His tenure as Duke was marked by his involvement in a series of rebellions against his father, King Henry II, and his close alliance with Philip, son of Louis VII of France. Geoffrey’s life was characterized by his ambitious political maneuvers and his strained relationship with his father, which culminated in his participation in military revolts and his reputation for treachery. He died at the age of 27 in Paris and was buried in Notre-Dame de Paris Cathedral.
