Geoffrey, Count of Nantes
1 June 1134 - 27 July 1158
House: Plantagenet
Titles: Count of Nantes
Geoffrey was born on 1 June 1134 in Rouen or Argentan, Normandy, as the second son of Empress Matilda and Geoffrey Plantagenet. His birth was difficult, nearly resulting in his mother's death. He was known by several names, including Geoffrey of Anjou and Geoffrey FitzEmpress, and was the brother of Henry II of England and William FitzEmpress.
Geoffrey's father, Geoffrey V, had intended for him to inherit Anjou and Maine if his brother Henry became king of England. Geoffrey was granted several castles, including Chinon, Loudun, Mirebeau, and Montsoreau. In 1152, he attempted to abduct Duchess Eleanor of Aquitaine but was thwarted. He later allied with King Louis VII and other nobles against his brother Henry.
Geoffrey died suddenly at Nantes on 27 July 1158 at the age of 24. After his death, his county was seized by Conan IV of Brittany, who later ceded it to Henry.
