Geoffrey, Count of Anjou, Duke of Normandy

Geoffrey Plantagenet, known as the Fair, was born on 24 August 1113. He was the elder son of Fulk V of Anjou and Ermengarde of Maine. In 1128, Geoffrey married Empress Matilda, daughter of King Henry I of England, which led to the establishment of the Plantagenet dynasty through their son Henry II. Geoffrey became the count of Anjou and Maine in 1129 after his father left for Jerusalem.

In 1135, following the death of King Henry I, Geoffrey supported Matilda's claim to the English throne. Although her cousin Stephen of Blois was crowned king, Geoffrey helped Matilda secure parts of Normandy. By 1144, Geoffrey had assumed the title of Duke of Normandy after entering Rouen and securing the region.

Geoffrey and Matilda had three sons: Henry, Geoffrey, and William. He also had illegitimate children, including Hamelin, Earl of Surrey, and Emma of Anjou. Geoffrey dealt with baronial rebellions in Anjou and conflicts with his brother Elias, whom he imprisoned until Elias's death in 1151.

Geoffrey Plantagenet died suddenly on 7 September 1151 after being stricken with fever. He was buried at St Julien's Cathedral in Le Mans, and his son Henry succeeded him, continuing the Plantagenet legacy.
