Fulbert of Falaise

Fulbert of Falaise served as the Chamberlain of the Duke of Normandy during the 11th century and is most notably recognized as the maternal grandfather of William the Conqueror. His daughter, Herleva, was involved in an extramarital relationship with Robert I, Duke of Normandy, which resulted in the birth of William the Conqueror at Falaise. Fulbert’s exact date of appointment as Chamberlain is uncertain, but it is speculated to have been after William’s birth.

While Orderic Vitalis provides some details on Fulbert’s occupation, the accuracy of these accounts is debated. Some sources, including Wace and Benoît de Sainte-Maure, have referred to Fulbert as a tanner or tailor, while others, such as Elisabeth van Houts, suggest that Herleva’s family may have been involved in funerary services. Fulbert’s social standing appears to have been more elevated than that of a tradesman, as indicated by the marriages and social connections of his children. He had two sons, Osbern and Walter, who were involved in the protection and service of their nephew, William the Conqueror.
