Frederick V Elector Palatine

Frederick V was the Elector Palatine of the Rhine from 1610 to 1623 and reigned briefly as King of Bohemia from 1619 to 1620. His reign in Bohemia was short-lived, leading to the nickname ‘the Winter King.’ Born in Deinschwang, Palatinate, he was the son of Frederick IV and Louise Juliana of Orange-Nassau. At the age of 17, he married Elizabeth Stuart, a Protestant princess. In 1618, during the outbreak of the Thirty Years’ War, the Protestant Czech nobility chose Frederick to be their king, but his rule ended after his defeat at the Battle of White Mountain in 1620. He was subsequently stripped of his Electorate of the Palatinate by an Imperial edict in 1623 and lived in exile until his death in Mainz in 1632.
