Frederick, Prince of Wales

Frederick Louis, also known as Friedrich Ludwig, was born in Hanover, Holy Roman Empire, and was the eldest son and heir apparent of King George II of Great Britain. Despite his position, he became estranged from his parents and was left in the care of his grand-uncle in Hanover for 14 years while his parents moved to Great Britain. After arriving in Britain in 1728, he was created Prince of Wales in 1729 and held the position until his death. He was a patron of the arts and sciences and was known for his opposition to his parents’ policies and his support for rival political factions and cultural institutions. Frederick’s life was marked by a strained relationship with his family, and he died before he could ascend the throne, leading to his son, George III, becoming king.
