Elizabeth de Burgh, born around 1289 in Ulster, Ireland, was the daughter of Richard Óg de Burgh, the 2nd Earl of Ulster, and his wife Margarite de Burgh. She married Robert the Bruce, who later became the King of Scots, in 1302. Elizabeth’s life was significantly affected by the Scottish-English conflict, which led to her being captured and imprisoned by the English for eight years.
Elizabeth was crowned Queen of Scots alongside her husband on 27 March 1306. Despite the political turmoil of the times, she bore Robert three children who survived to adulthood. Elizabeth’s life ended when she fell from her horse on 27 October 1327. Her death prompted the establishment of a chaplaincy at the Auld Kirk of Cullen, with Masses said for her soul—a tradition that continues to this day.
Death: Died at the age of approximately 38 after falling from her horse; buried at Dunfermline Abbey.
