Elizabeth de Bohun

Elizabeth de Bohun, née de Badlesmere, was born into the Badlesmere family at Castle Badlesmere, Kent, England, in 1313. She experienced a turbulent childhood, being imprisoned in the Tower of London at the age of eight with her mother and siblings following her mother’s assault on Queen consort Isabella. Elizabeth’s father, Bartholomew de Badlesmere, was executed in 1322 for rebellion, and her mother was imprisoned. Married at the age of three to Sir Edmund Mortimer, their union was not consummated until she was older, producing two sons. After Mortimer’s death, she married William de Bohun, 1st Earl of Northampton, in 1335, which resulted in two more children and the merging of the Mortimer and Bohun estates. Elizabeth’s life was deeply entwined with the political upheavals of her time, including the fall of her father-in-law, Roger Mortimer, 1st Earl of March. She died on 8 June 1356 and was buried in Black Friars Priory, London.
