Eleanor of Provence

Eleanor of Provence was born around 1223 and became Queen of England through her marriage to King Henry III in 1236, a role she held until his death in 1272. She acted as regent of England in 1253 during her husband’s absence in France. Despite her devotion to her husband, her introduction of numerous relatives from her retinue, known as ‘the Savoyards,’ into influential positions led to her unpopularity, particularly among Londoners. She bore five children, including the future King Edward I, and was noted for her intelligence, literary talent, and influence on fashion.

Eleanor’s life was marked by significant events, including her own attack by Londoners in 1263, her management of queen-gold collections, and her role as a regent. Following Henry’s death in 1272, she lived as queen dowager, taking part in the upbringing of her grandchildren. She withdrew to Amesbury Priory in 1286, where she died in 1291. Her grave is unmarked, but her heart was buried at the Franciscan priory of Greyfriars in London.
