Eleanor of Provence

Eleanor of Provence was born around 1223 in Aix-en-Provence, County of Provence. She was the daughter of Ramon Berenguer V, Count of Provence, and Beatrice of Savoy. Eleanor was well-educated and developed a love for reading and poetry, influenced by her tutor Romée de Villeneuve. Her beauty was renowned, and she was described as a dark-haired brunette with fine eyes.

In 1236, Eleanor married King Henry III of England, becoming Queen consort. She was devoted to her husband and served as regent during his absence in 1253. Eleanor's introduction of her Savoyard relatives into influential positions in England led to her unpopularity among Londoners. This animosity culminated in an attack on her barge by angry citizens.

Eleanor and Henry had five children, including the future King Edward I. She was particularly devoted to Edward, overseeing his upbringing and education. Eleanor was also known for her fashion sense, importing clothes from France and introducing new styles to England.

Eleanor of Provence died on 24 or 25 June 1291 at the age of 67 or 68 and was buried at Amesbury Priory. She was succeeded by her son, Edward I, as King of England.
