Eleanor de Montfort

Eleanor de Montfort, Princess of Wales and Lady of Snowdon, was born in 1252 and passed away on 19 June 1282. She was the daughter of Simon de Montfort, 6th Earl of Leicester, and Eleanor of England. Eleanor was the second woman recorded to have used the title Princess of Wales. Her maternal grandparents were King John of England and Isabella of Angoulême, and she had numerous royal aunts and uncles, including the King of England, Henry of Winchester, and the King of the Romans, Richard of Cornwall.

At the age of thirteen, Eleanor experienced the loss of her father and brother at the Battle of Evesham. Following their deaths, she and her family sought refuge in a Dominican nunnery in France. She married Llywelyn ap Gruffudd, Prince of Wales, in 1275, and was later captured and imprisoned by Edward I of England. After her release, she was officially married to Llywelyn in 1278 and became known as Princess of Wales and Lady of Snowdon. Her life was cut short at the age of 29 or 30 when she died giving birth to her daughter, Gwenllian of Wales.
