Edward the Exile, also known as Edward Ætheling, was born around 1016 as the son of King Edmund Ironside and Ealdgyth. After the Danish conquest of England, he and his brother Edmund were sent to the Swedish court with orders for their execution, which were not carried out. Their journey continued to Hungary, where they possibly joined Prince Andrew of Hungary in the 1030s.
In 1046, Edward likely returned to Hungary with Andrew, who reclaimed the throne. By 1054, King Edward the Confessor sought Edward the Exile's return to England to secure the succession. Edward returned to England in 1057 with his family, offering a potential resolution to the succession crisis.
Edward the Exile died on 19 April 1057 shortly after his return to England and was buried in Old St Paul's Cathedral. His death left the succession unresolved, as he did not meet King Edward the Confessor.
