Edward of Angoulême was born on 27 January 1365 in Angoulême as the eldest child of Edward, Prince of Wales, known as ‘the Black Prince’, and Joan, Countess of Kent. As a member of the House of Plantagenet and second in line to the English throne, his birth occurred amidst the Hundred Years’ War and was met with grand celebrations by his father and notable figures such as Charles V of France.
His premature death at the age of five led to his younger brother Richard of Bordeaux becoming the new second in line. Richard succeeded to the throne after their father’s death in 1376 and later honored Edward by commissioning a monument and possibly featuring him on the Wilton Diptych.
Death: Died at the age of five, circa 20 September 1370. Initially buried in Bordeaux, his remains were later moved to Kings Langley and finally to Austin Friars, London.
