Edward, Duke of Guelders

Edward served as the duke of Guelders and count of Zutphen from 1361 until his death in 1371. He was the youngest child of Duke Reginald II of Guelders and Eleanor of Woodstock, daughter of King Edward II of England. His rule began following a civil war against his brother Reginald III, which he instigated with his mother’s encouragement in 1350. He triumphed in 1361 after defeating the Heekeren faction, capturing and imprisoning his brother.

During his reign, Edward established strong alliances with the bishops of Lüttich and the dukes of Jülich and Kleve. His governance was effective despite initial adversity. In 1371, a dispute involving his brother-in-law led to the Battle of Baesweiler, where Edward sustained fatal injuries. His death initiated another succession conflict in Guelders, eventually resolved in favor of his nephew William of Jülich.
