Edmund Crouchback

Edmund, the 1st Earl of Lancaster, was a royal Plantagenet and founder of the House of Lancaster. His earldoms included Leicester, Lancaster, and Derby in England, and he was Count Palatine of Champagne in France. Born to King Henry III of England and Eleanor of Provence, he was the younger brother of King Edward I. Edmund’s early life was marked by his involvement in the ‘Sicilian business’ and the subsequent political turmoil it caused. He gained his titles and lands after the Second Barons’ War, becoming a powerful English baron. His epithet ‘Crouchback’ is believed to be derived from ‘cross back’, indicating his participation in the crusades.

Edmund was instrumental in several political and military campaigns, supporting his brother King Edward I in various endeavors, including the conquest of Wales and managing affairs in Ponthieu. His diplomatic efforts were notable, particularly during the tensions with France over Gascony. His marriage to Blanche of Artois brought him additional responsibilities as Count Palatine of Champagne. Edmund’s death occurred in Bayonne during a military campaign, and his body was interred at Westminster Abbey.
