Edmund Ætheling
1016 or 1017 - before 1057
House: Wessex
Edmund Ætheling was born in 1016 or 1017, the son of Edmund Ironside and Ealdgyth. His father, Edmund Ironside, briefly ruled as king of England after the death of his own father, Æthelred the Unready, in April 1016. Following a conflict with the Danish invader Cnut, Edmund Ironside died in late 1016, leaving Edmund Ætheling and his brother Edward the Exile as infants.
In 1017, Cnut sent Edmund Ætheling and his brother to the Continent, likely intending for them to be killed. However, the brothers were spared and eventually sent to Hungary, possibly after a stay at the court of Grand Prince Yaroslav I of Kiev. During their time in Hungary, Edmund may have married a daughter of the Hungarian king.
Edmund Ætheling's life in exile involved movement across Europe, from Sweden to Russia, and finally to Hungary. His brother Edward returned to England shortly before his death in 1057, but Edmund remained abroad. The circumstances of his life in Hungary are not well-documented, but he did not return to England.
Edmund Ætheling died in Hungary on 10 January in an unknown year before 1057. His brother Edward's return to England in 1057 marked the end of their family's direct connection to the English throne.
