Ealdgyth of Mercia

Ealdgyth, also known as Aldgyth or Edith in modern English, was a daughter of Ælfgar, Earl of Mercia. She was married to Gruffudd ap Llywelyn, the ruler of all Wales, and later became the wife and queen consort of Harold Godwinson, king of England in 1066. Ealdgyth was described by William of Jumièges as a considerable beauty. Her father, Ælfgar, was appointed earl of Mercia around 1057, succeeding his father Earl Leofric, and her mother was probably Ælfgifu.

Ealdgyth's father was exiled in 1055 on charges of treason, leading him to form an alliance with Gruffudd ap Llywelyn. After Gruffudd's death in 1063, she married Harold Godwinson. Ealdgyth's death details are not provided, and her succession was followed by the events of 1066.
