Ealdgyth, also known as Edith in modern English, was born around 992. She was initially married to Sigeferth, thegn of the Seven Burghs, and later became the wife of King Edmund Ironside. Ealdgyth is believed to have been the mother of Edmund's sons, Edward the Exile and Edmund Ætheling.
Her first husband, Sigeferth, was killed along with his brother Morcar at an assembly in Oxford, an act attributed to Ealdorman Eadric Streona. Following their deaths, King Æthelred the Unready seized their property and detained Ealdgyth at Malmesbury Abbey. Edmund Ironside later removed her from the abbey and married her, gaining the support of Sigeferth and Morcar's allies.
Ealdgyth died sometime after 1016, but the exact circumstances of her death and her burial place are unknown. She was succeeded as queen consort by Cnut's wife, Emma of Normandy.
