Eadgyth

Edith of England, also known as Eadgyth or Ædgyth, was a German queen from 936 through her marriage to King Otto I. She was born to King Edward the Elder and his second wife, Ælfflæd, making her a granddaughter of King Alfred the Great. Eadgyth had an older sister named Eadgifu and spent her early years near Winchester, frequently moving with the court. She may have lived in a monastery during her later youth with her mother.

Edith was sent to Germany with her sister Edgiva by their half-brother King Æthelstan at the request of King Henry the Fowler. Otto chose Edith for marriage, and they wed in 930. As queen consort, Edith was active in state duties, particularly in support of monasteries and memorials to saints. She accompanied Otto on his travels but not in battles, and played a role in introducing the cult of Saint Oswald of Northumbria to Germany. Eadgyth passed away in 946 at about thirty-six years of age and was buried in Magdeburg Cathedral.
