Eadgifu of Kent

Eadgifu of Kent was the third wife of Edward the Elder, King of Wessex. She was the daughter of Sigehelm, Ealdorman of Kent, who died at the Battle of the Holme in 902. Eadgifu married Edward around 919 and had four children, including Edmund I and Eadred, both of whom became kings of England.

After Edward's death, Eadgifu faced disputes over her inheritance but managed to retain lands at Cooling and Osterland. She was influential during the reigns of her sons, attesting many of their charters. Eadgifu was known for her religious devotion and was a benefactor of several churches, including Christ Church Canterbury.

Eadgifu died around 968 and was buried in Canterbury Cathedral. Her grandson Edgar succeeded to the throne after the death of Eadwig.
