Cristina

Cristina, daughter of Edward the Exile and Agatha, was born in the 1040s and was the sister of Edgar Ætheling and Saint Margaret of Scotland. She came to the Kingdom of England in 1057 from Hungary. After living in exile at the Scottish court of Malcolm III, she returned to England before 1086 to become a nun and eventually the abbess at Romsey Abbey, where she tutored her nieces Edith and Mary.

Cristina’s tenure as abbess was marked by an incident where her niece Edith, in a conclave of bishops, testified that Cristina had veiled her to protect her from Norman advances, which Edith later rejected. Cristina’s land-holdings were documented in the Domesday Book. Her death likely occurred before 1100, as she was not present to give evidence at the conclave and her nieces were transferred to Wilton Abbey for further education before 1093.
