Constance of Arles, born around 986, was the daughter of William I, Count of Provence, and Adelaide-Blanche of Anjou. She became Queen of France as the third wife of King Robert II after his divorce from Bertha of Burgundy. Her marriage was tumultuous, facing opposition from Bertha's family and criticism for bringing Provençal customs to the court.
Constance's influence was evident when she urged the crowning of her son Hugh Magnus as co-king in 1017. Family tensions arose when Hugh rebelled against his parents, leading to a temporary reconciliation before his untimely death. Disputes continued over the succession, with Constance favoring her third son Robert, while King Robert II preferred their second son Henry, who was eventually crowned in 1027.
Constance of Arles died on 28 July 1032 after passing out following a coughing fit and was buried beside her husband at Saint-Denis Basilica. Her son Henry I succeeded her husband as King of France.
