Bertha of Holland

Bertha of Holland, born around 1055 in Vlaardingen, Netherlands, was the daughter of Count Floris I of Holland and Gertrude of Saxony. She became Queen of France in 1072 after marrying King Philip I as part of a peace agreement between Philip and her stepfather, Count Robert I of Flanders. Bertha and Philip had three children after nine years of marriage, including Louis VI, who would later become king.

Bertha co-signed only a few donation charters during her queenship. She used her authority to reinstate an abbot, an action criticized in a hagiography written after her death. Her lineage was not of high nobility, which was a point of contention among contemporary chroniclers.

Bertha died on 15 October 1094 in Montreuil, Pas-de-Calais, France, shortly after being repudiated by Philip. Her son, Louis VI, succeeded to the French throne following the death of Philip I in 1108.
